Did you know that uncopyrightable is the joint longest word in English that can be written without repeating a single letter (dermatoglyphics is the other, but it's not as interesting), and that typewriter is the longest word to be written using only the top row of keys.

Bfb - making facts fun.

Jimmers wrote:It's not so much about evidence - I don't know facts any more than any of you. I do remember at the time of the first lot of diary stuff there were allusions made to it being set in 1994, but there were odd, out of context things like "maybe he just had his phone switched off" - like all schoolboys at the time carried around those massive phones with suitcases to carry the 4 ton battery in. I got my first mobile in about '96, and it was massive and expensive.

Also there was some guff about the sister scribbling on a school book, and in some bit of banter she shouted to Laura "but I was 4!!!" - which would make her 15 or 16 now.

Really, I don't care about odd bits and pieces, it's the air of arrogance where these people think you'll swallow any old rubbish just because they say it's true. Another example was the original 5 Decades with Colin and Edith: they used to claim the songs were played at that exact minute on the day in history. You know damned well there weren't computers around in the early years, so did they expect us to believe that some YTS girl sat there and logged the times and dates of every song on a W H Smith scribbling pad just in case in 20 years someone invented the PC?

Again, not a big deal, but I object to not being given any credit to spot a blatant lie. Why bother? It doesn't make the feature any less worthy to have it as stuff played on that day - and the fact they said it, like with all the things on all shows that have holes in them, just makes me more cynical about other things that happen by some spooky coincidence.

And about the diary "not mattering" if it's fiction - it fecking well does matter, because they're about to take a large amount of cash on the basis of it being real. If the book says on it that it's fiction, then I'll be happy, but otherwise someone's going to spend a lot of money on a lie. Imagine you bought an autobiography for 20 quid and found out it just wasn't true.

It matters.

hello there

i know Laura, i live in York and the diary is real.

I was given a copy of the book and it never says anyones phone was switched off. it says she looked up Jamie's number in the phone book and she says maybe his phone was broken - do you look up mobile numbers in a phone book?

Really you are clutching at straws, your evidence is badly researched and i guess unless you know Laura (like i do) you will never really know.

I agree that to de decieved is not a good thing but you're winding yourselves up over a conspiracy and you are not being decieved. the diaries were written, they were on the radio and they've been published. End of.

Maybe. But I still don't think so. Don't believe you either. And yes, I know I might be wrong, and if I were given proof, I would happily accept it - but you aren't going to be able to do that, so I still think the diaries are fiction. Which makes it all the more sad that they were not even remotely entertaining.

and here you help to confirm my point. they were never written to be entertaining. i agree some of it was dull as but they were never intended to be disected or critiqued like this, just some ramblings of a teenager.

personally i think its good that Laura's turned it around and got something out of them being published - she's humiliated enough so fair play

i don't think you're ever going to be persuaded Yudster and thats fair enough but don't you think that if they were made up they might be funnier and that Radio 1 would have had something to say about their authenticity if they agreed to have them published?

Come to York, i'll take you for a pint and i'll prove it to you mate!

If you don't mind me asking Ralph, how do you know Laura?

(also Yudster is of the female variety, hence matess.)

Ralph is the name of Laura's brother. I presume you're not her actual brother though.....

I think they're genuine. I haven't seen anything convincing enough to persuade me that they're not.

i stand corrected - thought mate was unisex? like noone says actress anymore - everyone is an actor. i digress.

i used to go to youthclub with her. still see her when she comes back home.

i know evryone from the diaries

pleased to meet you by the way

Pleased to meet you, and fair do's about the "mate" statement.

I still think it's massively fake though, and very badly acted...... oh, and not very amusing to boot.

But that's just my opinion.

alright, thats cool. just wanted to say my piece mate. just out of interest what would you need as bonafidey evidence?

I don't know, and no offence, but someone on here saying they went to youth club with Laura doesn't do it for me I'm afraid, anyone could make that claim, and even so it still doesn't make it true. Even if you did know her as a young-un, and even if all the people in the diary exist, and even if you know them and indeed her....... the whole thing could still be scripted, and probably is..... have you seen the Usual Suspects????

By all means correct me, but as it stands with the evidence that I have, and having heard it a bit on the radio I feel that it is as scripted as the rest of the Scott Mills show, and poorly portrayed to the public.

i take your point. i could be anyone. i can't prove who i am without giving personal details - ie where i live where the youth club was, surnames etc

so if i exist and i am the person i say i am and if people from the diary exist, don't you think they would have a problem with the whole thing - specially Ben who doesn't come out of it looking too good?

i think anything read on the radio will feel scripted to be honest - especially the diary because that was essentially what it was when it was read. a diary entry read allowed could be interpreted as a script.

i wsa just thinking about what could prove this to you but even if you were showed the diaries. the original ones - you wouldn't believe it as I could have got someone to write them out - right?

I may have this wrong, and please correct me if I am, but aren't the diaries largely based on her time at university?

most of it is when she's younger - school and college then uni, yeah.

and your point is?

ralph wrote:and your point is?

My point is massive, and very elegant, although I've never heard it referred to as my "point", although I suppose it is pointy in some respect................... oh hang on, I think I've got my wires crossed here, sorry.

No I don't really have a point, if your answer had been "yes it is all uni based" then I was going down the line where I would have questioned you as to how you know "everyone" in the diary when you only supposedly knew Laura at youth club which insinuates that you knew her not at uni, i.e. how did you know the characters from uni.

However you didn't give me the answer I was after, so I shall avoid that line of questioning...... never mind.

Nice to meet you too - but I still don't believe you! I think you in fact underline my opinion here, which is that genuine diaries would not have been written to be entertaining, so why put them on the air on Radio One's second biggest showcase? And if they were true, Laura would have had to agree to being humiliated to such a debasing and appalling degree, she must have levels of self respect low enough to render her barely human. And I don't think she is that stupid.

But I understand there are some very acceptable pubs in York, so next time I am heading up that way, i will let you know! But I'm afraid unless you can arrange to have Laura there too, you still won't be able to prove anything.....!
