Murray steps into ring for Radio 5

Julia Day, radio correspondent
Thursday January 26, 2006

BBC Radio 1 DJ Colin Murray has been handed a new role on Radio 5 Live hosting the Saturday morning cult quiz show Fighting Talk.
Murray takes over as the show's ringmaster from Christian O'Connell, who this week joined Virgin Radio as its new breakfast show host, and will make his first appearance on February 4 at 11am.

"Colin is one of the most interesting and dynamic broadcasters around. And he's keen to have a foothold in 5 Live, " said Bob Shennan, the controller of 5 Live.

Murray has already experience of Saturday mornings on the station after standing in for Eamonn Holmes on several occasions.

Mr Shennan said he believed Murray's quick wit and intelligence made him the ideal candidate to replace O'Connell, who made the show his own after taking over from its creator Johnny Vaughan, the original host.

Fanatical Liverpool football supporter Murray will be called upon to keep a panel of experts in line while they give their spin on the week's sporting events, awarding points for informed comments and penalising any witless outbursts, of which there are usually many.

Better known as one half of Radio 1's afternoon team alongside Edith Bowman, Belfast-born Murray is a former journalist who previously hosted Radio 1's The Session in Northern Ireland and fronted reports on Channel 4's breakfast show RI:SE.

That's me not listening to Fighting Talk anymore then.

shame was a good show , do the BBC not think that 15 hours of him on radio 1 is enough for a week.

I think I'll listen once but it'll be a shame if it's crap as it's always been a good laugh on a Saturday morning.

The Radio 1 DJ Colin Murray will have another show in his growing portfolio of commitments when he takes over presenting duties from John Barnes on Channel Five's football coverage, starting with Bolton's Uefa Cup tie against Marseille this month.
Murray, who is replacing Christian O'Connell as presenter of BBC Radio 5 Live's FightingTalk from next weekend, will front Five's match coverage.

That leaves Barnes, always more comfortable in conversation than presenting, to concentrate on interviews and analysis.

Maybe it means he'll finally realise no one actually likes him and leave Edith to do the show on Radio 1 by herself.

Sadly he featured on BBC 1 tonight talking about the demise of smash hits. Ever since he got on afternoons i wanted to never hear his voice again, sadly that seems like it's not going to happen.

What was all that about? I just switched the radio on to hear Colin Murray on Your Call and thought Scott must have gone home sick or something. Then Mills comes back on!
