Fun fact: Gabrielle Aplin sings the song for that advert.

She appeared on Scott Mills' show last year parodying the John Lewis ads, singing songs by inappropriate artists (Rage against the Machine, Nirvana, System of a Down etc.) to the style of John Lewis' adverts.

I did read about that and Gabrielle getting in touch with John Lewis on twitter to get the gig. Her EPs are amazing. The new album is definitely going on my first to buy next year.

She sounds like she is trying to be whatsername. Sheep-face. Greg James' ex. Her. As a result, she does sound like aforementioned Sheep-face - therefore not very good.

The ad is lovely though.

Hardly. Two very different singers. Try listening to this Gabrielle's EPs and you may change your mind ;). Greg James' ex (Ellie Goulding) is no original folk singer and comes from a more indie background.

Goulding, that's her. Couldn't get past an Ellie I know who is a 9 year old squash player.

Does Gabrielle Aplin only do covers?

No, no. It's what got her noticed. Her first two mini-albums are folk based. Listened to them on Spotify today and they're very good! She's got a full album of original stuff coming out early next year.

I think the version of The Power Of Love from the ad is awful. So WET.

How so? The girls voice is amazingly beautiful and relays the emotion accurately. Maybe you're too wet.

I don't have an issue with her voice, but I don't find any emotion in her version of the song at all. I'm not sure what you mean by maybe I'm too wet...that's the beauty of music though, something for everyone.

I think "wet" is a good description. Its an obvious attempt to go for whimsical and sweet, but it ends up being - wet.

Well I don't agree with you, but then I watch X-factor and cry, so I maybe am pre-disposed to enjoying the soaking drenched piss wet through style.

I love that advert, romantic Snowmen, apparently boosted sales by 16 million a week! Get it!

Oh I like the advert, it makes me cry in a way X-Factor never could! But out of that context, its not a great vocal.

Surely that is the point?

Spot on.

The song was chosen and created to go with the advert, it will have been a creative decision by the people who made the advert, which works really well. That version of the song should evoke the emotions of the advert, much like Celine Dion's 'My heart will go on'.

I think I had only seen the ad once when I heard the song on the radio - I don't watch a lot of live tv, and a lot of what I do watch seems to be BBC4 - so I didn't really have the context to hear the song in that way. I certainly wasn't criticising the ad, and it probably would make me cry, I cry at all sorts of stupid crap.

I once cried at the meerkat ad where you think they're making Sergei retire. I believe I may have been hormonal. It's all okay in the end though, because as we all now know, they don't make him retire - they just bought him a new laptopamabob.

Oh that makes me feel so much better, I thought it was depression related!

Last year I took the kids to a school concert from a group from Africa, it was amazing, and I blubbed pretty much the whole time, which was so so embarrassing ( not as embarrassing as Simpsons or Meercats, but then again Dawsons Creek and Smallville in the day would get me!)

Making me smile today is Nic, and not in the usual way she makes me smile!

Not smoked now for 5 days which is a real achievement for me. I've been really ill which has made me not want one but I intend to keep being smoke free when in good health.

Well played Deadly - if you can make that change it will be really significant in many areas of your life. Best of luck to you.
