"I'm off my head on sugar". (R1 DJ Sara Cox, 26/9/08)
Radio one legend Gwen Stefani was last night's choice.
Originally from Orange County, California, her own mum and dad had their own band. Great stuff. So, clearly they have been a musical influence from a young age.
She began her show with Bob Dylan (lovely). Interesting to hear how she felt his words were so miserable at a very young age, only to understand / appreciate them more as she grew older.
Fascinating to hear how No Doubt began, and the 1st song performed by Gwen was, in fact, On My Radio by the Selectors.
This was the point where the band knew they wanted to be serious, and Gwen began to write her own songs.
Great to hear that No Doubt managed to tour for 2.5 years off the back of the song, Don't Speak.
Fantastic how she managed to go on to be a solo artist.
Once again, good acknowledgement of r1, and how impressed she was by the station, their influence on her life, etc.
Interesting to hear her interests in fashion, as well as an ability to make great music.
She had lots more depth than I had expected, with musical influences ranging from Cyndi Lauper, Madness, reggae, Bob Dylan, but I did find her presenting style slightly mixed up, as she jumped a few times from the present back to her childhood, rather than systematically moving forwards, in the way previous Legends have done.
Marks out of 10 = 7.5 Once again, definitely worth a listen.
