anybody know whats used for the Chris Moyles podcasts?

There's not really anyway of knowing (Unless you where to Ask Aled or something), although alot of encoders use a LAME backend. Why do you want to know?

If you right click them in iTunes and click "Get Info" you can sometimes see whats been used to encode them but it doesnt say anything with the Moyles ones. I'm just interested to know what they use to keep the file sizes reasonably low but with the same high quality digital audio throughout because I would like to be able to do the same with my own podcast.

Well, encoding with LAME using the same quality settings (56 kbps, mono) the filesize is roughly the same (actually it's slightly smaller); so LAME should work fine for you.

The Moyles podcasts are encoded at 64kbps, 44100Hz and are in stereo. I've been using Nero for my own with similar settings and even though my own podcasts are, on average, roughly twice the length of the Moyles podcasts, the file sizes are still much larger averaging about 50MB as standard mp3s. As mp4s there about 30MB

Its basically a pain waiting for it to upload every time is all I'm saying and I was just wondering if there was any way I could reduce the file sizes without skimping on the audio quality?

If you send me a podcast (or an address of an already uploaded one then I'll see if I can re-encode it with greater compression for you.

You could use a compression program (rar, zip, bzip2 etc) to reduce the file size, but it would mean an extra step for both you and your listeners and may not reduce the file size much.

Okay, I downloaded 2006-08-12T07_00_38-07_00.mp3, which is 01:12:29.17s @ 64 kbps 22050 Hz (Joint Stereo), and it is 34793472B (34MB). Once mono'd the file size was basically cut in half to 17396193B (17MB), which sounds exactly the same to me.

The reason your files are so big is purely to do with the length of them. If you don't mind compromising with a lower bitrate, or having mono instead of stereo (or joint stereo in your case) then you can easily get a lower filesize; it's just a case of playing around with the settings and seeing what sounds alright.

I didn't really listen to them, I only had a quick listen to the quality. Incidentily, there seems to be a lot of music on the podcasts. Have you got a license (or whatever it is you need) to transmit them?
