I have been working at a certain job for nearly 4 years. Today I found out that 2 new starters have started working on the same wage that I am currently on (even though they're younger than me). I have just written a very blunt note to the general manager to tell him that I am not happy about this. Am I out of line? Please bare in mind that technically I shouldn't have found out what the new starters are paid.

I don't think you're out of order, although a face-to-face approach may have been a better idea, but depending on the boss it's not always possible. How did you find out the starters wages by the way?

You didn't expect them to accept less than the minimum wage did you?

I'd say it depends on a number of things. If they do the same job as you, how skilled the job is, whether you've had a promotion, what type of work you do etc...

The job i'm in people who do the same job as me get paid the same. Doesn't matter how long you've been there we get paid according to our skill level and you have to prove you can do the job first.

Of course it all depends on what you do I'd say, but those who don't ask don't get.

I was drunk when I wrote the letter as you probably guessed, but the more I think about it, the more I think I am totally right, and everyone I spoke to at work yesterday agreed. And I'm not on minimum wage whytie. And I also don't really think it matters that I found out what they are paid, as I could have just asked them and I'm sure they'd have told me.

You are totally within your rights as a worker to demand fairer wages, go for it.

I think the fact that you wrote a note to your manager shows weakness. If you had a bit more courage, then maybe you would have approached him/her to discuss it in person. They are more likely to listen to people who are not cowards really.

Thats harsh that is, i bet you! wouldn't have the guts to talk to me like that let alone to your boss

maybe if you had a bit more brain power you'll understand that if you carry on with comments like that no one will really care what you think any more!

Munroe made some excellent points. It's a shame that you have dismissed them so lightly.

I thought most jobs give you a 2-3% wage rise every April? It's bang out of order that they're earning the same as you. I'd have reported them as well

No employer has to.

The 2 - 3% rise is usually in line with inflation so one would assume starting rates for a similarly skilled job would rise also.

However I found out a guy making cables at my job eas earning more than me doing highly skilled PC work, simply because he had a mortgage. I pointed out to my boss that if I had a payrise I too could afford a mortgage.

Good man, prepared to stand up and say what you think to your boss, I applaud you. :D
(if there was a clapping emote here, I would use it)

Thanks 8)

It was tricky coz I got on great with the cable guy and my boss was cool too. But it just narked me off somewhat. You should be rewarded for skill and/or experience. Being skilled (and reliable) for several years is worth rewarding.

Exactly.

The irony is, I was actually training a supervisor up on Saturday, who is on a lot more than I am, and I could quite easily do her job, but I've never even been offered a supervisor position. Granted, I could have applied for the position, but I'm not sure I'd want the aggro. Having said that, if it was offered to me, I would accept.
