Could anyone recommend a program that converts Real Audio files into MP3s? I've tried NCH Switch but that doesn't seem to work, and I've looked on Google but can only find free trials. I'm guessing that there must be a way otherwise the Sound Vault here would be rather empty ;)
Thanks in advance

Because the listen again download is a RA file and I figured that if there wasn't a way of converting RA files into MP3 then no-one would be able to clip.

Thanks for the link

Most people record from a live, high quality, digital source as opposed to using 'Listen Again', but if you do want to convert real media files to anything else, then that program should be able to do it.

Yes, I've just made my first clip. It took a while to encode but it worked in the end. Thanks for the help Console :P

I recently contacted dickie regarding sound recording related questiois and suggested that the forums have a sticky thread detailing how you go about recording the show.

There might be people within the forums or people who visit the forums on the off chance they have the ability to record the show. Hopefully this will take the pressure away from those who currently record for the show.

I could help out but as I'm just starting out it took a little while for me to finish my clip. The biggest problem for me is finding a host, and not one of zupload.com style servers that means a 20mb clip takes 45mins to upload. I can certainly clip things for myself now so that will lessen the amount of requests a little. I haven't mastered the art of fading splits together yet so if I learn that I will make the odd file for people

Yeah, I did get your PM Adam but the only problem i can foresee is that putting up a sticky thread regarding how to download, encode and clip the Real Audio stream may not please the BBC a great deal. Not saying they would take any action but this site falls well inside the guidelines of the BBC at present and posting a fixed topic detailing how to work around listen again may not please them.

It's easiest I find to use a recording program and set your volume settings for recording to "audio output" or "wav mix" or similar, this basically records anything you are playing through media player or similar.

A problem though if your pc makes an unexpected sound or your pc stutters slightly and causes small problems.

True but if your PC is any good it won't stutter (never happened to me) and most sane people turn of system sounds after a week anyway because they just drive you nuts 8O

You just need a video editor that is capable of ripping the audio from it, or an mp3 encoder that can extract the audio from the video file (LAME is one such encoder).

Or the same idea I suggested as another option, if your PC is up to the job and you have system sounds disabled ;)

I consider myself a pretty sane person, and I have my 'system' sounds on.

I turn mine off because I do a lot of loop recording ... which lets face it is a lot easier than trying to find free tools to convert files ...

I find MSN noises and error sounds drive me up the wall and would no doubt drive my housemates up the wall too.

The problem with that is that you have to have the entire file play out to record the sound, while other methods are much more efficient.

I've never really had a problem converting between audio/video formats, with the possible exception of converting real video, which can be a real PITA.

Well I don't use MSN, and I don't make errors so that's probably why they don't annoy me

Good point - I was just thinking about recording clips rather than long items of audio where of course you're right, a converter would be much more useful.

I tend not to make errors either, sadly my operating system isn't so professional as it seems to suggest ;)

Actually, the program I posted on the first page might be able to rip the audio off of a audio/video file as it uses ffmpeg and/or mencoder as it's backend.
