I wish I'd have studied in Maths when I was at school, because now I love it. At school I just couldn't concentrate and consequently it all went over my head.

Sorry for the double post, but I can't edit.

Console, you'll probably be able to help me with this. Because I don't have anything better to do, I'm mocking up a spreadsheet that works out how long it would take for an object to fall x metres. How do I do it? If gravity imposes an acceleration of 9.81m/s^2, then how long does it take an object to fall one metre?

o o - gimmie a go!!

is it starting from rest??
if so then u=0
s=displacement (1m)
a=9.8,
t=what you want to find...

so you can use the equation: s = ut + 0.5at^2, and re-arrange it to find the value of it...

no guarentees tho, console will know :D

I think that Time = squareroot(distance/acceleration)

With acceleration for gravity being 9.81 ms^2, so a fall of 1 metre would be:-

T = sqrt(1/9.81) = 0.3194382825 s

That means if Mount Everest was on an island and you could chop it in half through the summit; jumping off the resulting cliff face would result in you landing in the sea exactly 30 seconds later. That is quite an interesting fact.

If you're a (decent) teacher of any sort I'll bear my arse in Iceland. The standards in teaching really has gone down.

In an academic sense I'm not sure if thats true. Certainly in Scotland an honours degree is required before getting into teacher training.

Re the practical side I couldn't comment. I have teacher parents and they certainly haven't said anything about the young people.
