I remember when it was still in development, when it changed from Whistler to XP, the reason given was a call of respect to the end of the NT line, which XP was based on. I suppose the eXPeriance thing could be a kind of backronym.

That's why you never get a Windows OS until it's been Service Packed at least once. They claim it'll be different this time, but I wouldn't count on it.
