Ricky Gervais "sells out" with his podcasts. The last one of his free run is out later today, but series 2 starts next week, and he's realised he can make a bit of money out of it!

Although I like the podcasts, I don't like Gervais's attitude of making people pay to listen to it - no matter how low the price. It seems the second he got the worlds most downloaded podcast he got money signs in his eyes and has rushed out a scheme to make money from it. Personally I have lost a bit of respect for him for this, but can you blame him?

Your thoughts - would you pay for podcasting (especially if you can get it for free from *ahem* other outlets)?

I think that the Gervais podcasts have all been great so far, but I wouldn't pay for them, for me it just seems against the spirit of it. Anyway, as you said, there are others ways of 'acquiring' them.

Just like you Fish Heads, I had much respect for Gervais and that wasn't only for his comedy genius but for his 'down to earth' persona. - Someone you could sort of relate to and someone who wasn't so overwhelmed by his fame and wealth he would do everything in his power to make ever more cash. Much like the divas of todays society... ALL the american stars and people like Simon Cowell and bloody Simon Fuller.
Gervais has now taken this ridiculous move and I don't think anyone except die hard fans will buy into it. Bad, Bad move.

Other people are charging for podcasts as well, LBC (a London Station) is charging £10 for 6 months of their podcasts, I think in the future we will see more people charging.

But Gervais keeps going on about how this series of 12 will be the last for a while because they are filming Extras etc. He mentioned that they'd be back on Guardian in a few months time, but there has been no mention of us having to pay for a new set of podcasts. Dammit.

Gervais mentioned paying for them on the latest one. He said that they'll have to charge a small fee because it'll cost them money (and because Karl is unemployed).

Is the millionaire Gervais having to pay some of his own money? Oh dear, better pay him then! ;)

can you blame him though? most americans are chumps and will gladly pay for anything he's done. why? because for a long time the only way you could watch the office through "normal channels" was via digital cable. most americans pay to watch him now, they'll pay to listen. it's always sad when good people start to buy into their own hype.

Most professional podcasts apear to only be dominated by radio dj's who are contractually obliged to provide this content as part of their output.

So in a sense, I can see the logic of a very famous comedian who is operating a similar setup independantly charging listeners.

Paid for podcasts will work one day, but however its going to take a lot more than karl pilkington pretending to be stupid for people to dig their hands in their pockets.

ive heard all of karls stories twice over now having listened to the xfm shows as well.

please dont pay for these - why couldnt he just put advertising on his show - i know that channel 4 did adverts on it. that would be more than enough to pay for it.

sky tried pay per view - people paid for it - they kept doing it

so learn from this. if you dont buy something then they wont charge

I think the point of the Moyles podcast is to either recap the best bits for those that heard it, or to just allow people who didn't hear all the shows to hear the best bits.

Yeah not everyone has 3 hours to spare 5 days a week from 7-10am listening to the radio, or three hours to spare to "listen again" .. it makes sense.. a 30ish minute podcast taking the highlights from 15 hours.

But that's not strictly true because most of the podcasts are just interviews with guests, which are normally not that funny. The best bits are the improvisations between records, and half-time during the show. The latest podcast which was the Brit interviews one was really disappointing.

That's everything up to Thursday done, I'll get t[…]
