Chip n Pin is sh*te - how the hell is it more secure than signing, it's so easy for someone to look over your shoulder.

I realise that but I'm paranoid of someone sneaking a look - it's a load of bollocks, I can't stand it.

Do you use ATM machines then?

Yes but I'm wary of them as well. I just can't see how it's more secure than a signature.

If they really wanted proper security on these things, they'd have to splash out and get fingerprint or iris scanners, that would be very secure (but expensive, I appreciate.)

With Chip and Pin, an important piece of information a thief needs to complete a "cardholder present" transaction isn't written on the card he's just nicked. Also, you don't (or shouldn't) have to hand your card to anybody else, which removes the chance of a dishonest merchant copying your card details.

Sorry to double-post (especially in a thread I started to complain about somebody else who posts too much, and off-topic to boot!), but you can't edit posts in here.

Chip and PIN effectively doubles the security of the system because now a transaction requires "something you know" as well as "something you have". The opportunist thief who steals your card probably won't have been standing behind you in the queue at the checkout or cash machine, so it's more difficult for him to use your card immediately (i.e., before you discover it's gone and report it) and anonymously (i.e., without having to provide a delivery address for something he buys online without needing the PIN). The determined thief who did see you key in your PIN is going to steal your money anyway.

Nothing can be 100% secure, and there's always got to be a balance between the usability of the system and the rigour of the security.

Am I being too serious for this forum?

People still hand me their cards at the post office, even though the card reader is RIGHT in front of them. I hate it. It's not that I'm a fan of tough security, it's the fact I cant be arsed to put their card in the reader for them.

Also, the number of people that put their card in the card reader, then forget about the card and walk out... I could be a very rich person if I wanted to be.

That's inevitable in the early days of a new system. It's not helped by the confusion in some shops where they have customer-facing card readers but still seem to need to take the card off you and run it through the till.

Yeah - helping the customers is such a chore, isn't it? The job's much easier without them. Briefly.

How? You don't know the PIN.

Tescos is a good example of that. Why do they need to do that?

Forgive me for dragging this thread back on-topic.

At first I thought microchip08 was innocent - just very young, and not familiar with the time-honoured tradition of lurking for a while on a board to get a feel for the place and an appreciation of the prevailing sense of humour and level of sarcasm. But the more he¹ continues to behave the same way, despite all the condemnation he's received, the more I think he must be a troll. I'm just waiting for him to ask: "What's a troll?"
(¹ Or she)

And don't get me started about FrankBob (formerly known as chrismoylesnetadmin)...

I've got to assume so, as he's waded in to just about every other thread in the last couple of weeks.

oliver wrote:dont you think its tight?

A little bit, yes - BUT... I've tried to be fair and not to descend to the level of rude words and personal insults, as others have. (Yes, I used the word 'stupid', but it was in a question, not a statement. The alternative to 'stupid' in the poll is 'effective troll' - which to an extent would suggest he's actually quite clever.)

This is a community site and for it to work effectively as intended all the members of the community need to be able to play nicely together. Newbies (and I'm one, too) should be able to accept guidance from others if they want to fit in, or understand that they're not welcome.

I also wanted to make the point that microchip08 and FrankBob are trolls, and they are only encouraged by others rising to their provocation. Ignore them and, with luck, they'll go away.

That's everything up to Thursday done, I'll get t[…]
