Run DMC, It's Tricky

Today's Transcript:

Last time was the Foo Fighters and Breakout. 'Breakout' was also the title of a 1996 hit for Swing Out Sister. A sister is just the male equivalent of a brother. Brother, the sewing machine manufacturers, used to sponsor Man City. Man City scored four goals in their last game, something they share in common with Leicester City, who last night annihilated Leeds, whose white shirts matched the white flag of surrender. Surrender is the action of a coward. Coward, first name Noel, was a famous playwright, which he shared in common with William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare shares the same Christian name as William Tell, who was famous for shooting apples off people's heads. 'Heads' is the opposite of 'tails'. Tails are sometimes worn at weddings, as are hats. 'Hats' rhymes with 'cats', which are also known as felines. 'Felines' rhymes with 'sealions', who are traditionally good at balancing beach balls on their noses, which is to be admired as it isn't easy, in fact it's tricky, which links to Run DMC and 'It's Tricky'.

Flaws:

'Sister' isn't the male equivalent of 'brother', it's the female.

The Charlatans, How High

Today's Transcript:

Run DMC grew up in a district called Queens. Queens are the female equivalent of kings. Kings of Leon are famous for having lots of hair, something they share in common with Dave Lee Travis. Dave Lee Travis was known as 'the hairy cornflake'. Cornflakes are a type of cereal, as is Holby City. Holby City is set in a hospital. A hospital is where you go when you're sick. Sick birds are not admitted to hospitals, and have to go to the vets. Vets played a vital role in the Vietname War. The Vietnam War was the setting for the film 'Full Metal Jacket'. Jacket potatoes are a good lunch option if you want to maintain a healthy diet like Tim Burgess of the Charlatans, which links to The Charlatans and 'How High'.

Flaws:

Texters claimed that Holby City is a soap rather than a serial, but otherwise seamless.

Stereo MC's, Step It Up

Today's Transcript:

'How high' is a question that might be asked by an apprentice scaffolder when tyrying to put together his first erection. 'Erection' shares many of the same letters as 'election', which is what politicians dream of winning. Dreams happen in your sleep. Sleep, first name Wayne, is a dancer, and Wayne, second name Rooney, is the answer against Turkey. The king of turkey is Bernard Matthews. If you remove the first three letters of 'Bernard' and reverse the letters that you have left you get 'darn', which is a way of mending your socks. Socks are sold in pairs, and in that respect share something in common with gloves, except for oven gloves. Oven gloves protect your hands from hot, hot heat. Hot Hot Heat are a band, as are Simple Minds, who are fronted by Jim Kerr. The gym is where you might go to improve your calves with some step-it-ups, which links to Stereo MC's and 'Step It Up'.

Flaws:

Reversing the last four letters of 'Bernard' makes 'dran', not 'darn'.

Perfecto Allstarz, Reach Up (Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag)

Today's Transcript:

'Step It Up' was released in 1992, the same year as 'Sleeping Satellite' by Tasmin Archer. Tasmin Archer is from Bradford, as are Terrorvision. Terrorvision had a big hit with 'Tequila'. Tequila comes from Mexico, which is famous for bandits. Bandits can often be armed and dangerous. If you add the letters 'M' and 'E' to the word 'dangerous' you get 'Dangermouse', who is probably the world's second most famous mouse after Mickey. 'Mickey' was a 1982 hit for Toni Basil. Basil was the name of John Cleese's character in 'Fawlty Towers', which also featured Manuel, who was Spanish. A Spanish word is 'perfecto', which links to Perfecto Allstarz and 'Reach Up (Papa's Got A Brand New Pig Bag)'.

Flaws:

Texters commented that Jerry (as in Tom and) may be the world's second most famous mouse. Also, Aled read out a text from our very own Tedious contributor Uglybob, pointing out that Dave had wrongly stated yesterday that the Stereo MC's record was from 1993.

Robbie Williams, Old Before I Die

Today's Transcript:

Perfecto Allstarz consisted of Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osbourne. Steve Osbourne shares the same surname as Jack Osbourne. Jack Osbourne has curly hair, something he shares in common with Art Garfunkel. Art Garfunkel is mates with Paul Simon, who has visited South Africa in the past for the purposes of work. Other celebrities who have visited South Africa for work are Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock, who did a garden makeover for Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela has met the Spice Girls, as has Prince Charles. Prince Charles plays polo. Polo involves horses, as do all equestrian events. The Word 'events' is an anagram of 'Steven'. Steven Seagal is a famous actor, as is Leslie Grantham, who was often seen behind the bar in the Queen Vic. The Queen Vic provided the backdrop for a cameo by Robbie Williams, which links to Robbie Williams and 'Old Before I Die'.

Flaws:

There was some argument as to whether Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon are in fact still mates or whether they had a bust-up, but the jury was out.

4 Non Blondes, What's Up

Today's Transcript:

Robbie Williams has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, as has Billy Connolly. Billy Connolly is married to Pamela Stephenson, who used to perform on 'Not The Nine O' Clock News' with Rowan Atkinson. Rowan Atkinson recently starred in a movie with Natalie Imbruglia. Natalie Imbruglia is from Australia, which is the birthplace of Rolf Harris. Rolf Harris wears glasses, something he shares in common with Elton John. Elton John plays the piano. Pianos have keys, as do prison wardens, who look after baddies. The word 'baddies' shares many of the same letters as 'daddies', which is a type of sauce. Other sauces include tomato and brown. Brown, first name James, no doubt provided inspiration for De La Soul. De La Soul had a hit with 'The Magic Number', which is now being used by BBC3, the station that brought us '3 Non Blondes'. 3 non blondes plus another give you 4 Non Blondes, which links to 4 Non Blondes and 'What's Up'.

Flaws:

Rolf Harris was in fact born in Wales. Also, Daddies is not a type of sauce but a brand, although Dave contested this issue as a technicality.

The Divine Comedy, Something For The Weekend

Today's Transcript:

4 Non Blondes achieved a top 60 hit with their follow-up single 'Spaceman'. 'Spaceman' was also the title of the 1996 no 1 by Babylon Zoo. Babylon Zoo were fronted by Jas Mann, who supports Wolverhampton Wanderers, as does Kevin Rowland of Dexy's Midnight Runners. Dexy's Midnight Runners first got to no 1 with the track 'Gino'. Gino Ginelli make ice cream, which is often difficult to eat for people with sensitive teeth, who can also have problems with hot drinks such as coffee. Coffee is made from roasted beans. Beans of a baked variety are often served with breakfast, although not by Mark Radcliffe, as he doesn't like them. Mark Radcliffe plays the drums, as does Rick from Ash. Ash are from Northern Ireland like the Divine Comedy, which links to the Divine Comedy and 'Something For The Weekend'.

Flaws:

Apparently Gino Ginelli ice cream has been discontinued. There was also some debate as to whether the Divine Comedy are in fact from Northern Ireland, and in fact their ever-changing lineup has included many non-Irish members, but the main component of the band Neil Hannon is indeed from Enniskillen, so we'll allow Dave that one.

Feeder, High

Today's Transcript:

The phrase "something for the weekend?" is hairdresser-speak for "do you need any johnnies?" Johnnies come in different flavours, like crisps. Crisps are made from potatoes, which live in the ground, as do moles, and it's as a result of their subterranean existence that they suffer from poor eyesight. Poor eyesight can be corrected by wearing spectacles. If you remove the first four letters of 'spectacles' and replace them with 'ten' you get 'tentacles', which are commonly found on octopii. Octopii are so named because their tentacles add up to eight. Eight multiplied by three is 24. '24' is a programme starring Kiefer Sutherland, whose dad is called Donald. 'Donald Where's Your Troosers' is a Scottish song about trousers. Trouser-wearing is a trademark of Simon Cowell who is well known for having his trousers pulled up too high, which links to Feeder and 'High'.

Flaws:

There was debate as to the plural of 'octopus', and in fact wikipedia uses 'octopuses' rather than 'octopii'.

Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, (I've Had) The Time Of My Life

Today's Transcript:

The lead singer of Feeder is Called Grant. Grant was the surname of the 'Brookisde' character Sheila, who was played by Sue Johnstone. Sue Johnstone teamed up once again with Ricky Tomlinson in 'The Royle Family', which was written by Caroline Aherne. Caroline Aherne shares the same surname as the Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern. Bertie Ahern's daughter Georgina is married to Westlife star Nicky Byrne. Nicky Byrne shares the same surname as Tony Byrne. Tony Byrne likes to hang out with the Mis-teeq ladies. The Mis-teeq ladies have performed in Leeds, as have Green Day. Green Day had a hit with 'Time Of Your Life (Good Riddance)'. "Good riddance" wasn't what people thought at the announcement that Will was defecting to television, in fact if I had to sum up how he'll look back on his time with us I'd imagine he'll say "I've had the time of my life", which links to Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes and '(I've Had) The Time Of My Life'.

Flaws:

Caroline Aherne and Bertie Ahern don't technically share the same surname, but otherwise all good.

Radiohead, Creep

Today's Transcript:

It was Steve Watson who had the time of his life yesterday as he hit a hat-trick in Everton's demolition of Leeds United in what has been dubbed 'the Roque-ay Horror Show'. The Rocky Horror Show stage production recently starred Jonathan Wilkes. Jonathan Wilkes was once on the books at Everton, and would have enjoyed playing against Rooney's men yesterday. Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. 'Far And Away' was a film starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Nicole Kidman has got lots of curly hair, something which she shares with Leeds United's Roque Junior. Junior Senior had a recent hit with 'Move Your Feet'. "Move your feet" is probably what Peter Reedd was saying during yesterday's half-time talk. 'Talk' rhymes with 'york', and if you add an 'E' to 'york' you get 'Yorke' as in Thom Yorke, which links to Radiohead and 'Creep'.

Today's Transcript:

A creep is what you might call someone who is constantly paying you compliments. 'Compliments On Your Kiss' was a hit for Red Dragon featuring Bryan & Tony Gold. 'Gold' was a hit for Spandau Ballet. 'Ballet' rhymes with 'chalet', which is like a mountainous house for skiiers. Skiiers wear woolly hats, as do some Rastafarians. One of the most famous Rastafarians was Bob Marley. Bob Marley was a keen follower of football, something he shares in common with Jimmy Hill. Jimmy Hill shares the same surname as Damon Hill the racing driver. A driver of a different sort might be found on a golf course. A golf course has lots of holes, as does a wooden bungalow invaded by termites. Speech from Arrested Development has collaborated with Neneh Cherry, who worked with Radio 1's Dreem Teem on the track 'Buddy X'. The Sex Pistols were fronted by Johnny Rotten, who now resides in California. California is currently in the midst of state elections, where Arnold from 'Diff'rent Strokes' is up against Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schwarzenegger is from Austria, the capital of which is Vienna. 'Vienna' was a big hit for Ultravox, who were fronted by Midge Ure. A midge is like a fly, and a fly is a device used in fishing. Fishing is how fish get from the sea to the chippy, where you might order a piece of cod. if you reverse the words 'piece' and 'cod' you get 'codpiece', which were made famous by Cameo, which links to Cameo and 'Word Up'.

Today's Transcript:

Cameo's codpiece has in fact got nothing to do with cod, peace or cricket. Cricket goolies protection is provided by what's known as a box. A box of a different type can provide shelter for the homeless. Homeless dogs from TV don't come much bigger than the Littlest Hobo. 'Hobo' rhymes with 'MOBO', which is an award for black music. 'Black music' shares many of the same letters as 'black magic', which is a type of African witchcraft. The word 'witchcraft' shares the same ending as the word 'hovercraft'. A hovercraft can move across land or water, as could Jesus. Jesus fed the five thousand with fishes and loaves of bread. Bread is a rich source of carbohydrate, as are baked beans. 'Jeremy' was a hit for Pearl Jam, who hail from Seattle, like Starbucks. 'Starbucks' was a hit for A. 'A' is the most frequently used vowel in the word 'abracadabra'. 'Abracadavra' was a hit for the Steve Miller Band, who reached the top spot in 1990 with 'The Joker'. The Joker is a character in Batman. Batman wears tights, which are sold in chemists, as is toothpaste. Toothpaste is an important thing to pack if you're gong away, perhaps on a recruitment weekend for the Territorial Army.
