Today's Tedious Link:

Daft Punk, One More Time

Today's Transcript:

'Jungle' rhymes with 'bungle', who was in 'Rainbow'. Rainbow had a hit in 1979 with 'Since You've Been Gone'. 'Gone With The Wind' is one of the most famous films that I've never seen. 'Seen' is the past tense of 'saw', as in sight, rather than what a magician would do to a woman. 'Woman' is a song title that links records by Wolfmother and John Lennon. John Lennon's son Julian had a hit with 'Saltwater'. Salt water is good for treating an open wound or gash. If you swap the 'G' of 'gash' for an 'M' you get 'mash', which is one of my favourite types of potato. 'Potato' in Spanish is 'patatas', as taught to us the other day by Tim Westwood. Westwood was in Spain last weekend for Six weeks of Summer, and this weekend it's the turn of JK & Joel, who are off to Tenerife as Radio 1 goes on holiday one more time, which links to Daft Punk and 'One More Time.

Flaws:

'Seen' is the past tense of 'see', not 'saw'.

Cornershop, Brimful of Asha

Today's Transcript:

The word 'jungle' shares many of the same letters as 'magle', as in Joe Mangle from 'Neighbours'. Joe Mangle was played by Mark Little, who presented 'The Big Breakfast' with Zoe Ball. Zoe Ball used to do 'Live and Kicking' with Jamie Theakston, who recently presented the Live Earth coverage with Claudia Winkleman. Claudia Winkleman shares the same first name as Claudia Schiffer, who me and Chris once helped with her luggage trolley at Heathrow Airport. Heathrow Airport has an abundance of parking. 'Parking' rhymes with 'larking', as in larking about, which is what Aled was doing on the beach in Mykonos and you can see at Radio 1 online, but beware, the video may involve buffering. If you change the first letter of 'buffering' to an 'S' you get 'suffering', which is like poverty and famine. Famine needs to be cured with food and cash. Food and cash are what I can get from my local shop, which is a corner shop, which links to Cornershop and 'Brimful of Asha'.

Flaws:

Evidently the team all forgot about the Daft Punk track Dave chose on the Friday before their holiday, as he instead linked from the Thursday track, GN'R's 'Welcome To The Jungle'. Nobody commented on this.

U2, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of

Today's Transcript:

'Brimful of Asha' wasn't up to much til it was remixed by Norman Cook. Norman Cook shares the same first name as Norman Lamont, who was Deputy Prime Minister in the days of John Major. 'Major' is one of Victoria Beckham's new favourite words now she's a resident of LA. 'L' and 'A' are the first two letters of the word 'lamp', which you might have in your house to bring you light. 'Light My Fire' was originally by The Doors, but was covered by Will young from 'Pop Idol'. 'Pop Idol' featured Dr Fox, who shares the same surname as Sam Fox, who did page 3 in the 80s. 'Acceptable In The 80s' was a hit for Calvin Harris, who is one of only two famous Calvins in the world, the other being Calvin Klein who makes underpants. Captain Underpants goes out with carrie, who sits next to Dominic, who is a big fan of U2, which links to U2 and 'Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of'.

Flaws:

A couple of Norman-based issues today: Norman Lamont was Chancellor, not Deputy Prime Minister; and Norman Cook doesn't really share the same first name as Norman Lamont, as Cook's real first name is Quentin (Dave mentioned that in a link only recently). Chris also challenged Dave's assertion that The Doors originally recorded 'Light My Fire', stating that the original was by Jose Feliciano, but in fact Dave was correct on this - The Doors wrote the track and recorded it in 1966, whereas Feliciano covered it in 1968.

Heaven 17, Temptation

Today's Transcript:

A moment is a really small amount of time. Time flies when you're having fun. Fun is what most people enjoy, unless they're really miserable like Jack Dee, who I think has a new DVD out. Out is the opposite of in, and out and in are the two main options in the world of belly-buttons. A belly-button is also called a navel, but is different to the type of naval that involves ships and seamen in places like Plymouth. Plymouth have a football team called Argyll, even though Argyll is in Scotland. Scotland is where the Proclaimers are from, who are called Craig and Charlie. Charlie is an abbreviation for Charles, as in King Charles, who was a big fan of spaniels. 'Spaniel' rhymes with 'Daniel', as in Daniel Day-Lewis, who was in 'Last Of the Mohicans'. The mohicans were a tribe who had the hairstyle later adopted by David Beckham. David Beckham used to play for Manchester United, as did Bryan Robson, who's now manager of Sheffield United. Sheffield is where Heaven 17 are from, which links to Heaven 17 and 'Temptation'.

Flaws:

A couple of queries today. Firstly, King Charles spaniels were actually made famous by their association with King Charles II, whereas just saying King Charles would usually indicate his father Charles I. There were also questions regarding Mohicans - in fact the hairstyle Dave referred to was originally known as a Mohawk and was influenced by the a representation of the Mohawk people of South America (from the 1939 movie 'Drums Along The Mohawk', fact fans), who were nothing to do with the Mohicans.

Kylie Minogue, Better The Devil You Know

Today's Transcript:

Temptation is something that can be considered a sin. 'It's A Sin' was a hit for the Pet Shop Boys, who are Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant. A tenant is what a landlord would want to rent his property. Property is what Kirstie and Phil are into on Channel 4. Four is the amount of people who can fit comfortably into a standard car, and is also a good number to have on your pub quiz team...there's the doorbell, I'll get it in a minute...quizzes are the speciality of Rob DJ, who is a big supporter of Leeds United. Leeds United are to appeal over their 15 point reduction. A reduction is what you'd find on the menu at one of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants. Gordon Ramsay is who Chris met up with while on holiday in New York. New York is the setting for the tv show 'Friends', which is a favourite show of Aled who is today's birthday boy, so today's Tedious Link is dedicated to him, which links to Kylie Minogue and 'Better The Devil You Know'.

Aled: Thankyou Dave!
Dave: Pleasure. I'm just gonna get the door, hang on.
Chris: Alright.
Aled: Where's he going?
Chris: Shh, just wait a second. Dave's just gone to get the door.
Aled: Is it that bad a song?
Chris: Dave's at his house by the way, for those of you who don't know. He's doing the show from his house, cos he's on...ooh! They've got a visitor.
Aled: Is it Granddad?
Chris: Nah, it can't be Granddad. Unless he's had a row with Grandma? He'd be back with the caravan.
Dave: Hello?
Chris: Hiya mate!
Dave: Oh, hi. Sorry.
Chris: Who was it?
Dave: It was the postman again.
Aled: Awww.
Dave: He comes every day at the moment!
Chris: Well, that's nice to hear. You must be very happy. Can we play the record now?
Dave: Go!

Flaws:

Temptation isn't a sin (Dave was thinking of Jesus being led into temptation). There were also some queries about the difference between a points deduction and reduction, and technically deduction is more to do with amounts whereas reduction is related to size, but that's a mere technicality.

Wildchild, Renegade Master

Today's Transcript:

Kylie's sister Dannii is to be a judge on the new series of 'X-Factor', alongside Louis Walsh. Louis Walsh was the man behind Boyzone. Boyzone's Shane Lynch shares the same surname as director David Lynch, who directed lots of stuff involving Nicolas Cage. Nicolas Cage was married to Lisa Marie Presley, who's the daughter of Elvis Presley the singer. Elvis Presley was known as the King, and died prematurely on the toilet. Toilets are represented by the initials WC. WC are the initials of Willie Carson, who's a famous jockey. Willie Carson shares the same surname as Johnny Carson, who's a legend in the world of American chat shows, a bit like David Letterman. I would imagine David Letterman has met Paris Hilton, who's been described as a wild child, which links to Wildchild and 'Renegade Master'.

Coldplay, Shiver

Today's Transcript:

'Wild Child' was released in 1998, the same year that the World Cup was hosted by France. France is where they had a revolution involving Napoleon. Napoleon was very short, and in that respect was a bit like Dennis Wise. Dennis Wise plays for Leeds United, who won their first game of the season on Saturday, which takes them up to -12 points. -12 in the world of centigrade temperatures is pretty cold, and would definitely require thermals and woollies. Woolly stuff comes from sheep, which like to live on hills. Hills tend to be smaller than mountains. Mountains can be climbed with the use of ropes and stuff. Rope was traditionally made in damp places like caves. Caves can provide a good source of shelter from wind and rain and stop you shivering, which links to Coldplay and 'Shiver'.

Flaws:

Seamless today. Some texters claimed that Napoleon wasn't connected to the French Revolution, but wiki confirms that Dave was correct on this.

John Lennon, Imagine

Today's Transcript:

Shiver is what your body does to keep warm. 'Keep Warm' was a big hit for Jinny. 'Jinny' is how people from New Zealand would pronounce 'Jenny', as in Jenny Eclair. An eclair is a pastry type thing made with chocolate and cream. 'Cream' was a hit for Prince, who apparently has told his people to set up a date with Kate Nash. If you swap the first letter of 'Nash' for an 'M' you get 'mash', which is what you have with bangers. Bangers are old cars that people race in fields. 'Fields of Gold' was a big record for Sting, whose real name is Gordon Sumner. Gordon is also the name of Gorden Kaye, the actor who played Rene in 'Allo Allo'. "Allo allo" is how they answer the phone in France, while 'moshi moshi' is what they say in Japan. Japan is where Yoko Ono is from, and Yoko Ono was married to John Lennon, which links to John Lennon and 'Imagine'.

Flaws:

Gordon Sumner and Gorden Kaye don't technically share the same first name.

Lenny Kravitz, Are You Gonna Go My Way

Today's Transcript:

John Lennon's son Julian had a hit with 'Saltwater'. Salt water is what you get in the sea, and can be very good for healing wounds. If you swap the first letter of 'wound' for an 'H' you get 'hound', as in 'Hounds of Love', which was a hit for Kate Bush. Bush is an Australian term for outback. Out back is where you might keep your stock if you were running a shop. Shops are what you get a lot of on the high street. Street is just another name for a road. 'Road Rage' was a hit for Catatonia, and one of the guitarists was on the judging panel of 'Taf Idol'. 'Taf Idol' is similar in style to 'X-Factor', which returns this Saturday night. 'Saturday Night' was a hit for Whigfield, who was briefly famous in 1994. If you go back one year from 1994 you get to 1993, which is when Lenny Kravitz released 'Are You Gonna Go My Way', which links to Lenny Kravitz and 'Are You Gonna Go My Way'.

Kool and the Gang, Celebration

Today's Transcript:

Lenny Kravitz shares the same initials as Lorraine Kelly off the telly. Telly Savalas was the actor who starred in 'Kojak', who was famous for sucking a lolly. Lolly was the pop star who had a hit with a cover of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' by Cyndi Lauper. If you swap the first letter of 'Lauper' for a 'P' you get 'pauper', which is a word for somebody who's really poor. Poor is the opposite of rich, like that woman who won the lottery jackpot of 35 million. 35 million is what Tottenham's strike force allegedly cost them, although they couldn't find the net on Tuesday night and were crushed by Everton, who are top of the league. 'League of Gentlemen' is a comedy series set in the village of Royston Vasey. Royston Vasey is the real name of comedian Roy Chubby Brown, who's been working in showbusiness for years. Someone else who's been in showbiz for years is our producer Rachel Jones, who's been in the business for ten years today so we're having a celebration, which links to Kool and the Gang and 'Celebration.

Fatboy Slim, The Rockafeller Skank

Today's Transcript:

Yesterday our celebration was to celebrate our latest set of audience figures, which are massive. Massive Attack had a hit with 'Teardrop', which has been covered by Newton Falkner on his debut album 'Handbuilt By Robots'. 'Robots' was one of Chris' film roles, the other being a brief appearance in 'Wimbledon'. Wimbledon is famous for two things, tennis and wombles. My favourite womble is probably Uncle Bulgaria. Bulgaria is in Eastern Europe, which is now expanding rapidly in the development of tourism. 'Tourist' was the title of the second album by Athlete. Athlete's foot is a fungal problem that can be alleviated with the use of powder. 'Powder' rhymes with 'chowder', which is a type of fishy soup. Fishy soup is something you can probably buy all year round here on the beach in Brighton. On the beach here is where Fatboy Slim staged a massive concert a few years ago, which links to Fatboy Slim and 'The Rockafeller Skank'.

REM, Losing My Religion

Today's Transcript:

Rockerfeller was a New York oil baron, which means he was obviously loaded. 'Loaded' was a big hit for Primal Scream. 'Scream If You Wanna Go Faster' was a hit for Geri Halliwell. Geri Halliwell shares the same surname as Eddi Halliwell, who's a famous DJ and mates with Pete Tong. Pete Tong spent Ibiza weekend handcuffed to a Smurf, like me who spent this weekend handcuffed to Aled dressed as one of the Village People. The Village People's name references the New York district of Greenwich Village. Greenwich in London is where the Royal Observatory is situated, which is where they do a lot of weather stuff. Weather stuff is known as meteorology, which takes its name from 'meteoron', which means 'high in the sky' in Greek. The Greeks did a lot of work in the field of sleep. When you sleep you have rapid eye movement or REM, which links to REM and 'Losing My Religion'.

Flaws:

The Royal Observatory is to do with astronomy, not meteorology. Additionally, the the Greek 'meteoron' refers to any phenomenon in the sky, so Dave wasn't 100% accurate on this (but almost).

Zoe, Sunshine On A Rainy Day

Today's Transcript:

Religion has been responsible for a lot of war. 'War' was an album by U2, who all went to the same school in Dublin. Dublin is the capital of Ireland, and is also where Louis Walsh is from. Louid Walsh is now back on the 'X-Factor' with Simon Cowell. Simon Cowell used to date Sinitta, who used to go out with Brad Pitt, who's married to Jennifer Aniston. Jennifer Aniston is from a Greek family, as is George Michael. George Michael used to be in Wham! with Andrww Ridgley, who's married to Keren Woodward, who was in Bananarama with Siobhan Fahey, who was married to Dave Stewart, who's the ex of Annie Lennox. Annie Lennox shares one name in common with Lennox Lewis, who's a boxer. Boxer is a breed of dog, as is collie. Cauliflower is often combined with cheese, which comes from cows. Cows lie down when it's raining and stand up when it stops, which means if you see a cow standing and then sitting it might indicate changing weather such as sunshine on a rainy day, which links to Zoe and 'Sunshine On A Rainy Day'.

Flaws:

Louis Walsh is actually from Mayo. Additionally, several texters challenged Dave's assertion that cows sit or lie down when it rains. Apparently it has been suggested that cows don't like sitting in wet grass, or dislike eating wet grass and so are keeping a patch dry, or that cows slip over when it gets wet so are taking precautionary measures - but all this is simply folklore and there is no hard evidence to show that cows' behaviour can predict the weather. (This fascinating insight from the article: http://www.theweatherclub.org.uk/features/article/behind-the-folklore-cows-lying-down.)

Prefab Sprout, The King Of Rock 'n' Roll

Today's Transcript:

Zoe rhymes with doey, which is a word associated with eyes. 'Eyes Wide Shut' is a film starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Nicole Kidman also did a film called 'Dead Calm' with Billy Zane. Billy Zane is now with kelly Brook, who used to go out with Jason Statham, who was in 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'. Barrels are what you'd find in the cellar of a pub. 'Pub' rhymes with 'rub', which is what you'd get if you'd booked in for a massage. 'Massage' shares many of the same letters as 'message', as in 'Message In A Bottle', which was a big hit for the Police, who were fronted by Sting. Sting is what bees like to do. Bees make honey, and apparently if you eat honey made in the same area where you live it will prevent you from getting sick. (Chris: "What?") Getting sick might happen to you if you don't eat enough vegetables, like carrots and sprouts. If you grew your own sprouts in a prefabricated building you might describe them as being 'prefab sprouts', which links to Prefab Sprout and 'The King Of Rock 'n' Roll'.

Flaws:

Technically bees don't like to sting people, as when they do, they then die. There were also questions about Dave's honey fact, and while it's a common belief that eating local honey can cure or prevent illness, apparently scientific studies have failed to prove the theory. (See http://www.thekitchn.com/fact-or-fiction-eating-local-h-146636 for more on this.)

Today's Transcript:

The king of rock 'n' roll for most people would be Elvis Presley, who died on the toilet. If you remove the middle letter of 'toilet' you get 'to let', which is what you might see written on a board outside an empty property. Property is the area of expertise of Kirstie and Phil. Phil Cool used to have a show that showcased his amazing rubber face. Face was the name of the 'A-Team' character played by Dirk Benedict. Dirk Benedict shares one name in common with eggs benedict, which is something you might have for breakfast. 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' was a no1 for Deep Blue Something. 'Something For The Weekend' was a hit for the Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy once supported Robbie Williams, who had a big hit with 'Lazy Days'. If you were enjoying lazy days in the park one thing you might see is a butterfly, which links to Crazy Town and 'Butterfly'.

Stereophonics, The Bartender And The Thief

Today's Transcript:

A butterfly is very similar to a moth, which is something you wouldn't want in your wardrobe cos it would eat your clothes. Clothes are what you wash and then hang out to dry. Dry is the opposite of sweet in the world of wine. Wine is made from grapes, which are crushed, sometimes by being trodden on by feet. Feet come in pairs, like socks and shoes. Socks and shoes are something you don't have to worry about much when you're on holiday. 'Holiday' is a song title that connects Madonna with Green Day. 'Green' rhymes with 'lean', which is a good quality in the world of bacon. Bacon is something that Denmark is famous for. People from Denmark are Danish. Danish pastries are what you might find on a continental breakfast. Breakfast is apparently the most important meal of the day. Day is the opposite of night, which is when you'd probably be going to work if you were a bartender or a thief , which links to Stereophonics and 'The Bartender And The Thief'.

The video for 'The Bartender And The Thief' was filmed on a boat on a river in Thailand. Thailand is somewhere that has very hot food. Hot food normally contains lots of chili peppers. Red Hot Chili Peppers were a headline act at last year's Reading and Leeds festivals. Festivals involve lots of people camping in tents. Tents have zips and guy ropes. Guy is the name of one of the members of Coldplay, who had a hit with 'Clocks'. Clocks are what you have to reset if you travel around the world. 'All Around The World' is a song title that links The Jam and Lisa Stansfield. Lisa Stansfield is from Rochdale, who last night lost to Delia Smith's Norwich City. Delia Smith can probably cook a mean korma. If you replace the 'O' in 'korma' with an 'A' you get 'karma', which links to Culture Club and 'Karma Chameleon'.

Ibiza is an island, which means it's entirely surrounded by water. 'Water' rhymes with 'daughter', which is the title of a record by Pearl Jam. Jam is a preserve. Preserve is what scientists would want to do if they found a woolly mammoth trapped in ice. If you found the word 'ice' in somebody's phone book it would probably be their next of kin, because 'ICE' stands for 'in case of emergency'. 'Emergency On Planet Earth' was a hit for Jamiroquai. 'Kids' is a word for baby goats. Goats' meat is popular in places like Africa. Africa is where Ewan MacGregor and Charlie Boorman rode across, ending up in Cape Town. Cape Town has a famous landmark called Table Mountain, which has a flat top. Flat top was a hairstyle in the mid-80s, made popular by Dolph Lundgren, who is Swedish like Ulrika Jonsson. Ulrika Jonsson used to host 'Gladiators' with John Fashnau, who played for Wimbledon with Dennis Wise. Dennis Wise has an interest in keeping fit, as does Jane Fonda. Jane Fonda was sampled on Bob Sinclar's 'Gym Tonic', which was redone by Spacedust, which links to Spacedust and 'Gym and Tonic'.

The Charlatans, One To Another

Today's Transcript:

'Gym and Tonic' sounds a bit like gin and tonic, which is a drink best enjoyed with ice and a slice of lemon. Lemons are something you'd find at the greengrocers'. Greengrocers sell vegetables as well as fruit, and the amount of fruit and vegetables you're supposed to have every day is five. Five years is half a decade. The word 'decade' comes from the word 'deca', which is Latin. Latin was spoken in the time of the Romans. A famous Roman is Roman Abramovich, who's from Russia. 'From Russia With Love' was a James Bond novel, written by Ian Fleming. Ian Fleming shares the same surname as Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin. Today's Transcript:

'Another Day In Paradise' was a hit for Phil Collins, who I think now lives in Switzerland. Switzerland is a very mountainous country famous for making chocolate. Chocolate is made from cocoa beans, which grow in hot countries like Ecuador. 'Ecuador' was a hit for Sash. Sash is a word associated with windows. Windows are found on your computer, which was invented by Charles Babbage. 'Babbage' rhymes with 'cabbage', which is something you might grow in the garden. The Garden of Eden is where Adam and Eve used to live. Adam and Eve featured in the Bible, along with Noah. Noah built an ark to transport animals overseas. Some animals are now extinct, like the dodo. 'Dodo' sounds a lot like 'Dido', who's probably met Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes, which links to 4 Non Blondes and 'What's Up'.

"What's up Doc" was the catchphrase of Bugs Bunny, who is a famous rabbit. If you remove the last letter of 'rabbit' you get 'rabbi', who is a leader in the Jewish faith. 'Faith' was a hit for George Michael. George Michael shares one name in common with George Galloway, who was on 'Celebrity Big Brother' dressed as a cat. Cats have a tendency to get themselves stuck up trees and have to be rescued by firemen. When an emergency call comes, firemen slide down a pole. Pole, first name Graham, is a famous referee in football. Football was originally played by kicking the bladder of a pig. Pigs' feet are called trotters. Trotters Independent Traders was Del and Rodney's company in 'Only Fools and Horses', which was located in their flat in Nelson Mandela House. A bond is something that can be traded on the stock market, and in the world of high finance profit is represented by the colour black. Black is also the colour you associate with goths, like the Sisters of Mercy, which links to Sisters of Mercy and 'Temple of Love'.

Flaws:

Nothing to report.

This goth classic divided the studio, causing Chris to demand a text poll to gauge the listener reaction. Dave insisted that it's a great track, and frankly I agree.

Oceanic, Insanity

Today's Transcript:

'Temple of Love' is a great record, as proved yesterday by our poll. A Pole is how you'd describe somebody from Poland. There are lots of people from Poland here in the UK, as a result of them joining the European Union. the word 'union' shares all but one of the same letters as 'onion', which is the only vegetable that can make you cry. crying involves the production of tears. Tears For Fears were a band that included Curt Smith. Smith is the most common surname in the UK, whereas in the Republic of Irelans it's Murphy. Murphy is a surname that links Fulham signing Danny with American actress Brittany, who was in Eminem's '8 Mile' film. In films and TV shows the most popular fictional name for an airline is Oceanic, which links to Oceanic and 'Insanity'.

Flaws:

Seamless once again.

Tedious Facts:

There was much debate regarding which version of the song to be played, although to be honest, neither of the ones tested sounded quite like the track I remember.

The Farm, Groovy Train

Today's Transcript:

Insanity is what people sometimes try to plead to excuse them from bad stuff. Bad stuff is the opposite of 'Good Stuff', which was a hit for Kelis, who also did a song about milkshake. Milkshakes are something you normally drink through a straw. Straw is what you would use as bedding for a horse. The best place for a horse to sleep is probably in a stable, which is also where Jesus was born. Jesus' father was called Joseph, and was a famous carpenter. Carpenter, first name Lou, is the character in 'Neighbours' who owns half the general store with Harold. Harold was washed away in a freak accident and presumed dead, but was found alive five years later by Helen Daniels. Helen Daniels is now dead, and in that respect shares something in common with Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria has lots of pubs named after her, while Queen Elizabeth has ships. 'Ship of Fools' was a hit for Erasure, who also had a hit with 'Blue Savannah' in 1990. 1990 was also the year of The Farm's first hit, which links to The Farm and 'Groovy Train'.

Flaws:

Many texters argued that Jesus' father was in fact God and not Joseph, but both are right really.
