hello peeps
I'm new here and I just want to say hello to all at chrismoyles.net. I've been listening to chris moyles for about 2-3 years and I think he's the best thing since the wheel, and can't wait to read the book, and bring back car park cachphase!!

Nasty text talk and atrocious spelling corrected - try harder 3/10 - Chris

But "text talk" doesn't help, and getting into the habit of it probably makes dyslexia harder to overcome in the long run. So Chris has a point too. Also, a huge number of people who are NOT dyslexic and constantly use text talk to communicate are ending up pretty much illiterate because of it apparently. I simply can't imagine how you get through school and come out the other end of it unable to write (or read either, quite often it seems) - I mean how do you DO that? I really don't know - but the reality is that thousands of kids are in exactly that position every year, for reasons ranging from dyslexia through to laziness and everything in between. Dyslexia isn't the only reason for having appalling writing skills, but it is seen as an acceptable excuse, so many people use it who maybe shouldn't. And no, Osiris, I'm not saying that's you, I'm just trying to be balanced......aaaaaaargh!!! Fell over.

So use a spellchecker.

I suspect stupidity, personally - it wasn't confused letters it was just plain awful spelling.

well i am, so there we go, anyway,

There are lots of dislexic people in the country so thats why its quite common that people say that, as a lot of people have it and its certinly not there fault for having it i am sure if they had a choice they wouldn't have it.

I when to a hole school with them its a very comon thing these days.

Its an interesting one, isn't it? "word blindness" can be genuinely demonstrated in some people, but the majority of those people are of the generation who were forced to write right-handed, even though they were naturally left-handed. As far as I am aware, this is not an issue in any form of education in this country these days, so that can pretty much be ruled out as a cause. But whatever the explanation, there are a lot of people out there who genuinely have this difficulty, and it is often associated with other developmental problems. The other thing which is clear is that there are a lot of people who have been genuinely medically diagnosed as dyslexic when they are probably not, their problems are behavioural rather than physiological. But the word "dyslexia" has become a catch-all for anyone who can't spell, whatever the reason. Its a shame, because this kind of institutional lumping together of people with very different problems, and treating them all as though they have the SAME problem, doesn't do any of them any favours.

Hey guys, why are you being so mean about how the newbie posts?

Okay, yes he may be dyslexic and have trouble writing but there is really no need to pick up on it and im sure if he stays around he will get the idea of the flow of the forum.

The reason why I actually dont post here anymore is because of what Is going to be thrown back at me as your the same with all the newbies who post on here, and also people who dont have many posts like myself.

I still browse the forum and thought I should say something when I saw this thread.

Anyways welcome to the forum Osiris.

Well done Chris, are you feeling really big and clever now? I hope slagging off someone for their spelling, who happens to be dyslexic, has brightened your day. I am technically a newb here, since I never post. I also have an artificial leg, feel free to continue you barrage on the disabled, as long as it makes you feel good.

Don't try and defend yourself on this one either, all you had to do was to send a simple PM to him, asking him to improve his spelling in future. Why was there a need to publically show it up like this?

Did you happen to see Extra's on Thursday?

The vast majority of people who don't spell correctly and/or use text talk do so out of laziness, not a learning disability. It would take seconds to either spell check the word or write it properly, and it's considered good netiquette to do so.

Firstly, re-read this:

Did you happen to see Extra's on Thursday?

The vast majority of people who don't spell correctly and/or use text talk do so out of laziness, not a learning disability.

and think about how incredibly stupid is makes you sound. Instead of getting your medical research from a comedy show, find me a respected paper proving your point, either that or shut up.

Secondly, being the big cheese here, do you not think Chris should have a quiet word with somebody new, rather than throwing the book at him straight away? I could see your point if he had been posting for weeks like this, and had been told many times to post using "proper" English, but you aren't exactly making a very friendly environment by making him out to be an idiot after 1 post.

Sorry, but those were actually two seperate points. And what point is it that you want me to prove with a medical paper? That most people are too lazy to write/type properly? Most people's experience would reflect that most people constantly mispell words and use text talk, and I don't think that the dyslexia rate is that high.

I have no interest in anything that doesn't affect the smooth running of the board. If you cannot write in intelligible English and there is something that can help with that, then use it. Until then you don't get my sympathy.

Do you realise how many people join up and actually do think text talk is an acceptable form of communication?

The guy is either lazy or stupid. Dyslexic or not you can't argue with that.

You pick up on all the negatives. Take a look at this thread, someone says hi, people say hi back - what's your problem with that (or 99% of the other threads here?)

Michael (I guess that is your name) - there is a difference between text talk and dyslexia. Text talk can be beat out of someone. Most people will stop using it if asked to and they realise how it makes them look stupid when everyone else is posting legible posts. Dyslexia is a condition that there isn't much known about, but it is a recognised condition. Slagging off someones spelling publicly when they are dyslexic is no better than laughing at a blind man on the street because he can't see.

Chris - I am not saying you are wrong for telling him to stop using text talk, I just don't think you should have made him out to be an idiot in the process.

You really didn't respond to my point, did you.

Also I'd be willing to bet that you didn't see his original message before it was edited, what wasn't spelled incorrectly (which he may/may not have an excuse for) was txt speak. I'm not on a crusade to improve the spelling, but if I walked into your house with, say, my dirty boots on wouldn't you say something? Substitute 'your house' for 'my forum' and 'dirty boots' for 'txt talk' and I think my point is made.

We have thousands of members, hundreds of whom post. Take your first post - what's your complaint there? Didn't we treat you well enough? Should we really be fawning over new members or should we treat them as we'd treat any other user here, new or old?

Rant over. To everyone: don't use text talk. If you can't spell, spell check it. If you've an artificial leg, one eye or three nipples then I couldn't care less - it's not relevant.

When I first joined some forums I actually used text talk language,it took a simple PM from a Mod/Admin to ask me to change into english language as some people couldnt understand what I was saying.

I dont see why you didnt do that, sending a simple PM isnt going to do any harm but a thread like this is.

People expect to come onto the forums to be welcomed not to be slated.
