I wish I'd put a bet on at the start of the tournament that Gerrard would miss in a shoot out - so many crucial goals in the past year or so, he was bound to miss one

C. Ronaldo better not go back to Manchester - he'll be hated now. Probably by everyone.

Funny how everyone moans at Frank, but when fat boy Rooney gets (another) red card....

England are never going to win the World Cup in our lifetime, that was their best chance, so I don't know why you didn't expect it

Hmm... I think we need to stick Sven in a boat half way to Sweden and pull the plug on it!

Rooney is one of the best players in the world, no doubt about it but he (along with others) were used wrongly. You can't stick Rooney on his own up front, surrounded by four defenders and lump balls at him all day... If you're going to do that you might as well play Crouch instead of Rooney.

England's midfield, on paper, is surely one of the best, if not the best, midfield in the world but they just didn't come together - even Gerrard played alright, but not how we know Gerrard can play... Not that it was their fault, if they're played out of their natural position then what do you expect. That's why Rooney couldn't score. In the end I just think he got more and more frustrated and that's why he had a go at Ronaldo... Although, I know that's no excuse. He's got a hot head and it probably helps his game but there are downsides to that too.

Unrealistic though it may be, please please give the bloody England manager job back to Terry Venables! You listen to him on ITV and just think if you put him in the dressing room, you get the feeling things would be so much better. Failing that Sam Allardyce.

Having said all that, it was the best match we'd played all tournament today - especially after Rooney got sent off, everyone seemed to sort of fall into their club positions and play a lot better.

Lamps is a muppet. He's done nothing in the tourney. At least sven is out of the way now. Maybe now our england squad can progress.

Like I have said many times, he is overrated. It's ironic that Hargreaves was the only English player who managed to score.

the whole england midfield needs to work together. i'm not as bitter as i was 10 hours ago, but england could have won that. rooney's a brat and needs to grow up. you can't say he's one of the best players in the world with a straight face untill he learns some patience- that can really separate the greats from the wannabes.

oh well... we all knew it was going to happen.

way to go france!

i am dissapointed it ended in the way it did on bloody penalties. it is no way for any team to go out. but their performance when they went down to 10 men was good. hargraves impressed me the most, he played very well.
a lot of people will probably try to blame rooney but it isn't his fault. there has been a lot worse than that happen and players have stopped on the feild.
i was impressed with france, hopefully they can make ronaldo cry in the semis.

I'm not just saying this because I am Scottish, but the performance of both teams were shocking. Neither England or Portugal deserve to win the world cup.
