I want to give The Daily Mirror full marks on starting a campaign where repeat sex offenders must spend the rest of their lives in prison. What that man from Wales did was so shocking and I really hope this is a wake up call. Let's go the route of America and make prisoners serve much longer sentances.

Spot on my son, and the sun is doing a grand job on naming lenient judges. The problem is that UK judges are so far gone from reality that they think 10 or 12 years is a strict sentence. Bring back the old judges I say, look at Ronnie and Reggie Kray, jailed for a minimum of 30 years each despite only killing other gangsters. The great train robbers aswell are a prime example, all they did was cosh a driver and steal money which can be replaced. If you look at the scumbags of the 21st century, it seems they can molest and rape children who aren't even at school yet and they get 5 or 7 years in jail. The British legal system is a fooking disgrace.

RANT OVER.

I'm in favour of harsher punishments as long as it doesn't go too far (death sentence, etc). Child molesters and paedophiles (who have been convicted only once) should be given a minimum of 20 years in prison and anything after that, they should be made to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. Even those released after a first conviction should be made to wear a tag for the rest of their lives.

All violent crime should be a minimum of 10 years as well, while they're at it.

The problem is that the jails are so full and prisoners are costing so much money that they are trying to get people out before they are fit to be released.

america can't deal with its prisoners because they don't reform- they only train people to move on to harsher crime or unable to cope with the outside world and become repeat offenders. there's also the question of what to do when sex offenders when they are released/paroled? in california, they are to be released to the county they committed the original offense in, but nobody wants them. now they're being forced into housing on prison grounds, and even then nobody wants them. i can't really blame communities, but i also know that not all sex offenders are repeat offenders, and many was more than willing to comply with court mandated treatment programs.

here's the website to track sex offenders near you in the us. there are 409 near me.

I always thought that life did mean life, but what do I know? If they change the terms to mean that the offender actually does spend the rest of their life in prison, then I'll fully support it

One of the books I was reading said that America was also sometimes guilty of rushing people through the system before they were ready to be released... One such prisoner was apparently Arthur Shawcross - they won't be wanting to make a mistake like that again, eh?

I remember the News of the World naming and shaming convicted paedophiles in their paper just after the Sarah Payne killing... It was a stupid thing to do, people were attacked for having the same name as someone who was named and shamed, people just took the law into their own hands. I still to this day refuse to buy the News of the World because of that.

not many vigilante attacks, but there are some protests when a new person is to be moved into an area. cary verse was one local case of a person who couldn't find a home.
