The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

I do laugh at Changing Tracks most of the time, but sometimes it can be quite sad. I have finished work now, but when I did I would make sure I was at the radio every day for 11.10.

I can't help think most of them are made up though.

i actully find colin and edith funny, sometimes

Jo is just a bandwagon jumper...arctic monkeys were championed by her...because zaneor steve didnt play them first did they...

she also jumped on gnarls berkleys bandwagon, zane played them in october last year...

she's bloody annoying

So Jo shouldn't have played them? If she liked them she shouldn't have said she did so?

Jo brings music from the specialist shows into the mainstream. It would be a bit wrong if Jo was playing them before the specialist shows whose aim is really to try find new music.

Wow good comeback you great all knowing and amazing guy.

Zane played it then Jo pretty much had it straight after so she didn't jump on the bandwagon there.

I don't think she tries to sounds "all knowing and amazing". She has a great good knowledge of music and has contributed alot to the music industry by breaking new artists so even if i thought she did sound "all knowing and amazing" I think she's the right to.

I think I might take your "all knowing and amazing" status.

Right then, let's get this in context -*straps riot gear on for fear of folowing posts*

No-one on radio1 saving the leg-end that was was John Peel discoveres new music, not even Zane Lowe with his troup of Sith Ifricin bloodhounds discovers new music. Zane lowe gets sent loads of music by record and promotion compaines 99% of which is crap. He then chooses what he thinks is the best of the bunch and plays them so he has not discovered them, he is playing out what the record companies send him.

So it's down to him or any other DJ that plays "new music" picking what they like which get's exposure for said band which generates more people listening/buying whatever which causes radio staions to give more exposure until if they are good enough they make it into the mainsteam when everybody complains how they've sold out and gone too commercial cos everyone is listening to them so people go in search of another un-heard of band that no-one's heard of.

If Zane Lowe finds new music, where was he when Girls aloud released their album, it was new, why didn't he play it or is it just "new music that I like sounds a little bit different"

It's not Jo Wiley's job to play new music, it' her job to play popular music and if there's a band that's causing quite a stir she may play it and say "listen to this, you may not have heard it but it's really good"
.
The people that "discover" new music are the A&R people from record companies who go to random gigs and get badgered all the time.

Let the backlash commence.

That would be a good argument if every band Zane plays have a record deal.

Again the Arctic Monkeys a perfect example. They got attention from Radio 1 and then the press before they had a record label sending out their stuff. Believe it or not Zane might actually go out to gigs to see unsigned artists and not just sit at home listening to promo CDs.

You're saying record labels never sent John Peel new music?

Well they don't now. I'm sure they probably did but Peel used to play a lot more unsigned bands, whether they were good or not really.

As for the Artic Monkeys, there have always been artisits that have sucessfully managed to promote themselves, but they usually get a bit of exposure in their home town and then send Zane a CD. I'm sure he probably does go to a few unisgned band gigs but my point (there really actually is one) is that he plays the music on his show that he likes and wants to promote. I'm not comparing him to Peel...but (there's always a but) Peel used to play stuff whether he liked it or not.

End of the day I'm not much of a fan of Zane lowe but I'm sure others are.

I always have Jo on in the background whilst listening again and clipping other shows.
Whatever other people think about her bandwagon jumping - She introduced me to some great new bands over the past year that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise

I'd definately go along with that, she is pleasant enough to listen too, and the music is good

Unless I've missed something in the thread, I don't remember anyone saying anyone on Radio 1 discovers new music. Their strapline is "new music first", not "new music that we discovered". It is true they break a lot of new bands into the mainstream, but I don't remember anyone saying Radio 1 discovered them.

Well thats a ridiculous point because Zane works on a specialist show that plays rock/indie/alternative music, plus a bit of dance/hip hop etc. Even if he had liked the Girls Aloud album - its pop, a category of music the specialist shows don't play.

Andy B wrote:It's not Jo Wiley's job to play new music, it' her job to play popular music and if there's a band that's causing quite a stir she may play it and say "listen to this, you may not have heard it but it's really good"

I agree with this, but the emphasis on Jo's show has always been on her playing playlist stuff, with an additional number of "free plays" that she picks. It is a good outlet to hear new music, particularly for listeners with the radio on at work doing 9-5, who then get home and switch off the radio (thus not listening to Zane in the evening).

For the record by the way, I think Zane Lowe is brilliant.

Are you serious? Jo Whiley - pleasant enough to listen to?

She makes me want to hack my own ears off with a blunt teaspoon just so I don't have to hear her droaning, self-adoring, dull nonsense from 10 - 1 each day. She has the personalty of a lettuce and is about as amusing as genital warts which refuse to be treated.

I was really drunk when I worte that. Seriously, room spinningly drunk. I think I was just having a general rant at Zane lowe cos I don't like him but I do like Jo.

Am considering changing my signature to "Ignore all posts by user after 11.30pm"

It just vexes me when people say Jo whiley is "Jumping on the bandwagon" as if she says she likes something because Zane says it's good. She is a fan of music after all and what's wrong with being passionate about it was my point.

I think I could possibly have got that across in a clearer manner had I been sober.
